Bush Radio is Africa’s oldest community radio station project based in Cape Town, South Africa with an audience of 86 000 listeners. The idea of Bush Radio started in the 1980’s when community activists and alternative media producers came together to explore ways in which grassroots media could be used for social upliftment and as an alternative voice to the media available under apartheid broadcasting in English, Afrikaans and Xhosa. Bush Radio’s activities can be divided into four areas: Broadcasting, Upliftment projects, Scholarship and training programmes & Human Potential Development with an area coverage of Greater Cape Town & surrounds, Cape Flats, West Coast, past Atlantis, to Gordons Bay and Mfuleni/Strand area. Coverage also includes Khayelitsha, Mitchell’s Plain, Manenberg, Gugulethu, Nyanga and Phillipi.
